Claude Speeed’s original soundtrack of Medialab’s LAB#03
For the third track of the original soundtrack of the LAB#03, Claude Speeed has collaborated with Adam Campbell.
Adam Campbell is a Scottish musician currently residing in Berlin, who co-manages Fancyyyyy, a record label and publisher specialising in cybernetic music instruments alongside Tristan Clutterbuck. Their collaborative efforts involve engaging in spontaneous and improvisational explorations, delving into the realm of hybrid digital, analog, and acoustic feedback systems. The focus of their work revolves around the concepts of nonlinearity, noise, and cybernetics.
Speeed and Campbell’s collaboration, titled WHAT, captures the results generated by a self-controlled neural network synthesiser. Trained on control parameters indicating potential points of interest within the system, the neural network is guided by machine listening algorithms, determining the form and spectral content of the output in a nonlinear fashion. The synthesis algorithm amalgamates techniques from both analog and digital music realms, incorporating Pulsar Synthesis as initially described by Curtis Roads and the Benjolin designed by Rob Hordijk. This combination results in a chaotic system, producing unforeseen sonic outputs.
The accompanying video is a product of various clips fed into a customised algorithm. This algorithm dissects the input into slices of varying lengths and rearranges them stochastically. The final video serves as a representation of the initial algorithm run, remaining unedited to preserve the authenticity of the output.
Claude Speeed is a Scottish music producer and artist currently residing in Berlin, whose work investigates themes of memory, perception and futurity. Automation and stochastic processes have always been a major feature of his music, which in the last few years has evolved into generative AI and machine learning spaces. For the LAB#03, Speeed is creating an OST to the themes of Synthetic Minds, responding in sound and visuals.
