Anil Bawa-Cavia

I'm a PhD student at the Center for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA), an inter-disciplinary research center at University College London. CASA is concerned with urban analysis, specialising in visualisation and modeling. My work has been covered by a number of publications, including Wired, The Guardian, De:Bug Magazine, and The Independent. My doctoral thesis is on mobility in urban spatial networks, and is grounded in spatial analysis and network science, with an emphasis on large-scale data.

My background is in social technology. During my Masters in Computing (2004), I completed a dissertation on social software with a focus on social reading. I since joined the startup team at Last.fm, a social music network which mapped all the music on the planet using principles of Big Data, collective intelligence and collaborative filtering. Last.fm sold to CBS in Summer 2008, and is still regarded one of the biggest European Web successes ever.

A summary of my research to date can be read in the transcript of my latest speaking engagement, a talk produced for Cognitive Cities, a conference held in Berlin on 26 Feb, 2011:
