Medialab is a space for innovation and research that welcomes projects which are too exceptional to fit within the strict parameters of academic research, which is often unable to bring together and interweave diverse disciplines or positions that lie somewhere between theory and practice.
Medialab promotes ideas and projects which, despite their brilliance and transformative potential, do not find a place within more discipline-specific public programmes. Furthermore, with the aim of fostering cross-pollination between Matadero’s various programmes, the Centre for Artistic Residencies (CRA) collaborates with and hosts these projects in its workspaces, alongside other projects spanning a wide range of contemporary creative practices.
Situated Research projects are selected through an international open call. The three proposals selected for development in 2026 are:
► The Digital Gesture: on the magical condition of technique, by Andrea Muniaín and Paula Ramos Mollá.
► User Agreement, by Álvaro Soto.
► Deconstructing the Aesthetics of Power, by Calin Segal.
The projects are developed and presented through workshops, seminars and discussions, amongst other activities that take place over the course of the twelve-month residency. Furthermore, the findings and conclusions of the research are presented at the end of the programme.
