TERRITORIO ECTOPLASMA INTRODUCTION: WHO WANTS THE CLOUD IN THEIR BACKWARD?

Many of us use phones, computers, streaming platforms, video games, and other services that increase data production and consumption. Many celebrate advances in climate science, healthcare and electromobility, or are excited about developments in AI, the Internet of Things, and the Metaverse. Consequently, we support the opening of new mines, extraction of more resources, constructing more data centers, the production of more batteries and development of more power plants that keep the promises of infinite growth alive. Contemporary digital infrastructures are only sometimes visible but always have an impact. Their functioning depends on sacrificial areas that take the burden for all; on communities whose bodies experience long-term impacts derive from changes in the quality of air, water and soil. The degradation of these site’s environmental, social and mental ecologies (in this seminar defined as Territorios Ectoplasma) is generally presented as the lesser evil. If not there, then, where?, some ask, accepting destruction of certain bodies and ecosystems as inevitable. The question, however, is whether we are ready to reconsider the ethics of a society founded on extractivism and consumerism and learn to live appropriately on Earth.

8 - 9 pm PERFORMATIVE LECTURE
CHEN-YU WANG

Do you know how the iPhone is made? Do you consider this as you hold one in your hand? Artist and designer Chen Yu Wang presents Dis-Assembling (2022), her latest project. While iPhones seem ubiquitous now, Wang says, they are particularly pervasive in the lives of over a million Foxconn factory workers. The realities of those producing the celebrated design product are generally not of concern for their users. Dis-assembling presents a series of works aligning the artist’s personal stories and reflections surrounding Foxconn factories in Asia to their strict bodily systematization.

Chen Yu Wang is an artist and factory girl from Taiwan, currently working in The Netherlands. She completed her MA in Social Design from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2022. She reflects on personal experiences with political and industrial systems, and considers multiple perspectives from both the East and West on conflicts that emerge under capitalism today through textile sculptures, installations and performances. Creating these new realities becomes a therapeutic tool to revisit imprinted sensation and knowledge.
