Semiotic energies in urban space

Semiotic energies in urban space is a research experience to explore and perform semantic analysis in order to measure the influence of words contained in urban space, coming from advertising, traffic and circulation signs.

The imperceptible influence of accumulated signs, repeated and modulated in the shopping windows, on bags marked with transnational brands. Circulation and traffic signs, alert calls, caution, alarm, here, there, closer, somewhere else. The rhythmic repetition of lights and sounds, confirm the signs located in space.

Some questions to be explored are, how is space produced in zones and places highly congested.

As a reference we will be using the writings of Lefebvre, Guattari and Bakhtin. This is an invitation to explore collectively in order to register words and execute statistical techniques that will allow to establish a space of semantic analysis.

Collaborators might be integrated in the working groups of the project according to the different stages and suggested tools:

Registration of words, artists, ethnographers, anthropologists, architects, engineers - Collaborative writing

Semantic analysis: Software programmers, Python, R

Visualization: Media designers, graphic designers, software programmers - Processing, JAVA

Sonification: Software programmers, sound designers - Super Collider, Pure Data

Alejandra Perez (1972) is a noise artist and media designer. She has worked making collaborative writing workshops with students from the faculty of physical sciences and mathematics in the University of Chile in  Santiago and developed experiences of semantic analysis of texts with working groups in Barcelona and Montreal.

Currently she is doing her Mphil Phd at University of Westminster in London, UK. Her research is focused on the detection of rhythm and imperceptible influences in space, where the study of semiotic energies is one of the influences considered.

Her areas of work are, artistic research, writing, noise performance, education, interface design, and development of instruments for frequency detection and sound art using FOSS tools (Pure Data, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, DIY-DIWO electronics, Gnu Linux)
