Visualizar18, Personal Data: selected projects

Visualizar18: Datos Personales
Visualizar18: Datos Personales

These are the six projects selected for Visualizar18: Personal Data data visualization workshop.

This workshop takes place from Friday, September 21st to Friday, October 5th

To collaborate with any of the projects, it is necessary to sign up for the call for collaborators that remains open until one day before the start (Wednesday, September 19th at 23:59 CEST)

The 6 selected projects are:

A-9. Black Eyes

Everything we do today is controlled in one way or another without, many times, realizing it. A thousand and one eyes observe us and keep all the information that we provide them voluntarily and involuntarily. Beyond all that we can provide digitally through our devices, they are observing us physically, controlling all our movements through the thousand black eyes distributed in the form of cameras all over the world.

The goal of this project is to dupe us into it and become demigods, in the eye that everything go. Be aware of how from the here and now, new technologies, even those that are at reach our hand, let us know what is happening on the other side of the world. This is what happens, for example, with the case of traffic cameras … we live in a globalized era where neither borders nor natural obstacles pose any problem for the exchange of information.

Microblogs and micropolitics: data pictures and data selfies in Twitter

Once released from the tyranny of the Twitter timeline, how would we see ourselves? customized visualization, can help us to perceive our echo chambers and those of our public institutions and elected politicians? Can small data, from the information we produce in the microblogs agency forms of micropolitics in the normalized, panoptic and enagenante world of the Big Data? Can the code become a common language, beyond the programmers and the geeks, to express forms of critical literacy in these forms of micropolitics?

In this project, participants will be able to export, scrape, encode and visualize, in original ways, the personal data they produce on a daily basis on their public Twitter timeline and, if there is time, to do something similar with public institutions and elected politicians, bridging micropolitics and politics, code, data, visualizations and digital literacy, so that they can outline answers to these questions and generate others, with tentative answers.

My [inte] gration

Project created to be the voice of the voiceless through technological inclusion. The aim is to correlate big data and thick data as instruments that give sufficient knowledge about the rights and needs of migrants, refugees, minorities and vulnerable communities, and that through these data spaces, cities and inclusive policies can be reconsidered.

Specifically designed for the context of Madrid, it is based on the principles of citizen participation and the sovereignty of data, which serve to give voice to the claims of human rights suffered by migrants, refugees and minorities in Spain who have been excluded and infantilized in their destinies and even more in technological inclusion (although I am formulated to be able to scale worldwide in different contexts) My integraton is a small solution that changes the perception of the migratory crisis to one of opportunities for migration and interculturality .

Bad Data Challenge

Until recently, media reports have mainly covered the consequences of bad algorithms. Far less attention has been paid to the quality and accuracy of data that actually feeds those algorithms. Algorithms are mathematical tools used to analyse and process large amounts of information, find hidden patterns and produce specific outputs.

We’re interested in when data is collected, pre-processed and stored. We want to capture data problems before the algorithms kicks in. It’s at this stage that corrupted, out of date, useless or illegal data can become part of the operations performed by algorithms and lead to problematic results. In this way, bad data plays an important part of all kinds of decision-making processes and outcomes. From banking to health to social services or education, bad data can have an important impact on our most fundamental rights.

Personal Data Game

For most of the people, personal data are so abstract that it is difficult to imagine what they are and what their value is, beyond their obvious use, for example, for day-to-day procedures and services. However, the massive extraction of these data with crossings of statistical information and the application of advanced algorithms, justifies a technical ideology of foreign visions, which are not obvious to anyone and which go beyond what we can achieve to see about what It is done with our information. Information that some use to their advantage to apply political, economic and social decisions that affect us daily.

To visualize these data, to give them body, it is necessary to process them through experience and play. He project is proposed to make a board game with modeled visualizations of our data in objects attractive to the touch and sensitive to the physical effects of the environment. Forms that fit together or not fit, move forward, slip or trip. A game in which we visualize the importance of our data, building models of these that we know how to protect from different threats. The big G and his flashy minions

The big magnate G has been clever, positioning his flashy minions in our hands so now they watch over us constantly. The data gathered by G's mobile apps and web browser is apparently to help us and obtain the best possible user experience.

The aim of this project is to develop a web tool for those who want to know which information about them is gathered by the diferent apps and how it's organized, we'll proceed to its comfortable visualization with different classifications to explore it. Inside this tool we'll include textual and video resources.

With this project we will try to develop a useful platform but also make it fun, creative and dynamic, appealing to a wide age range. We'll do this by creating a spy story that will be reflected in the design and discourse of the materials.
