The Digitizing workshop aims to cover all the jobs related with text digitization using free and open technologies. Following this purpose, the workshop´s program will begin with the creation of a scanner to specifically digitize books promoted by the free software and hardware community http://www.diybookscanner.org. Later the workshop will move on to selecting works related to digital culture that are either in the public domain, orphan works or works licensed under Creative Commons. A key point in the workshop will be the focus in legal issues related to putting digital contents in the public domain. Once the scanner is built, all questions related to digitizing techniques, OCR, content indexing, proofreading and future edition will be addressed. It is also important to mark-up and XML tag (XML Marker) written contents, here is where the term digital editing makes complete sense.

Once digitized and edited, texts will be digitally distributed through free software that is appropriated such as Greenstone, an application created in New Zealand under the auspices of UNESCO for developing countries.
