Souveniring Almost Anything Workshop
3D scanning of Madrid city

Souveniring Almost Anything is a workshop on photogrammetry and 3D scanning in the context of Po-Hao Chi's artist-in-residency project Collage of Hybridity, which will be presented on July 15th at Medialab Prado in Madrid.

Photogrammetry, or Structure-from-Motion, is a method of reconstructing the 3D model of an arbitrary object from a series of photographs using a digital camera. This technique can trace, record and represent geometries, textures, and sites both efficiently and relatively inexpensively. In this workshop, participants will learn how to systematically photograph things and the steps of processing digital images into a 3D model with Agisoft's MetaShape and Meshlab.

The workshop is structured in one practical session at Medialab Prado. In the first part of the session, the artist will explain the procedure of photogrammetry to help participants understand the possible strategies to obtain optimal results. During the second part of the session, participants will need to find an object as the "souvenir" to scan, and then use digital tools to process, clean, optimize models and leave them ready to use in other digital environments, for example, 3D sculpting softwares or WebVR environment on a webpage. Participants will get a basic understanding of photogrammetry and gain the necessary skills to reconstruct 3D models from multiple photographs.

  • Requirements: Basic knowledge in using smartphone and computer, a smartphone with built-in digital camera, and a laptop.
  • Expected outcomes: A digital 3D model and 3D printed model.

IMPORTANT: The workshop will be held in English. And, to attend the workshop, registration is required: register as a user and subscribe.

This workshop is part of the residency of Taiwanese artist Po Hao Chi at Medialab Prado. Here you will find more information about his project: https://www.medialab-matadero.es/en/news/collage-hybridities
