Datalab investigates and experiments with practices such as information visualisation, data mining, data journalism, collective mapping and participatory information gathering by citizens.

Similarly, it aims to promote and facilitate policies of access to and reuse of information that champion movements like Open Data and Open Science, as well as institutional and governmental transparency practices.

Its main areas of action are the Visualizar programme (launched in 2007 as an open research and participatory process focusing on theory, tools and strategies of information visualisation, and the Data Journalism, programme launched in 2012, dedicated to sharing, disseminating, exploring and producing journalism projects and tools in which working with data is an essential component.
